Studio Policy

The Modern Piano Room is dedicated to helping students become confident, creative musicians. Our lessons build a strong foundation in music literacy, technique, performance, and creativity. Please read this document carefully to understand how our studio operates.

Studio Calendar

The teaching year at The Modern Piano Room is divided into three terms:

  • Fall - September to January (18 weeks)
  • Winter - February to June (18 weeks)
  • Summer - July through August (8 weeks)

Each term follows a detailed studio calendar that outlines lesson dates, payment deadlines, studio holidays, and special events such as recitals and camps. For convenience, the most up-to-date version of the studio calendar is always available for download on the studio website. Families are encouraged to refer to the online calendar regularly, as I do not send calendar updates by email.

New Students

New students are accepted on a rolling basis, and if a student joins partway through a term, tuition will be prorated to reflect the number of remaining lessons.

Students are expected to commit to the full term, as steady progress depends on consistent attendance.

Make-Up Lessons & Cancellations

If you need to cancel a lesson, at least 24 hours' notice is required to be eligible for a make-up lesson. Make-up lessons are offered at my discretion and depend on availability. While I do my best to accommodate, make-up lessons for student absences are not guaranteed. However, I may provide alternative solutions such as studio group classes or video assignments when possible.

In the event that I need to cancel a lesson, I will either reschedule the lesson or apply a credit toward your next term. If a student is feeling unwell, I am happy to offer a virtual lesson as an alternative to in-person attendance.

Discontinuing Lessons

I expect students to commit to lessons for the full duration of the term. If you decide to discontinue lessons, I ask that you provide notice before the next term’s payment deadline. Tuition is non-refundable once the term has begun. I reserve the right to discontinue lessons in cases of non-payment, excessive absences, or failure to follow studio policies.

Tuition & Payment

Tuition is billed by the term and is due by the deadline specified in the studio calendar. Payment can be made by e-transfer, which is preferred, or by credit card. Tuition covers your reserved weekly lesson time, all lesson preparation, studio materials, and participation in term events.

Once the term has begun, tuition becomes non-refundable. As your lesson time is reserved specifically for you, missed lessons do not reduce tuition. If tuition is not paid on time, lessons may be suspended until the balance is settled. Studio holidays are accounted for in the term calendar, and therefore do not require make-up lessons or refunds.

Practice Expectations

Progress in music is built on consistent practice. For young beginners between the ages of four and six, I recommend ten to fifteen minutes of daily practice. For elementary level students, I recommend twenty to thirty minutes each day. Practice plans are tailored to each student’s goals and experience level, and I encourage parents to support the development of a regular practice routine at home.

Materials & Supplies

Students are responsible for purchasing their own music books and required materials. Each student should also bring a notebook or binder to every lesson, which will be used for notes and weekly assignments. For home practice, I expect students to have access to a well-maintained acoustic piano or a full-sized digital piano with weighted keys.

Performance Opportunities

Throughout the year, I offer recitals and studio performance events. These events give students the opportunity to celebrate their progress and gain valuable performance experience. While participation is optional, it is strongly encouraged. I will help each student prepare for performances by covering repertoire selection, preparation, and performance etiquette during lessons.

Camps & Special Programs

In addition to regular lessons, The Modern Piano Room offers optional camps and workshops throughout the year. Popular options include our Summer Piano Camps, as well as March Break Camps designed to inspire creativity. Registration for camps is separate from regular tuition and will be announced in advance of each event. Camps provide a fun and exciting way for students to explore music beyond their weekly lessons.

Studio Communication

I am always happy to stay connected with families and students. Communication typically takes place by email or text message. I provide regular lesson notes, studio updates, and event announcements to keep you informed throughout the term. Please make sure your contact information stays current so you don’t miss important updates.

Media Consent

From time to time, photos or videos may be taken during lessons, studio events, or camps for use on the studio website, social media pages, or newsletters. I will not share any identifying details without your explicit permission. Media consent is requested during the registration process, and you are free to opt in or out at any time.

Final Notes

At The Modern Piano Room, my mission is to make music an exciting, enriching, and lifelong journey for every student. If you have any questions about these policies, I warmly invite you to reach out at any time. Thank you for being part of our studio family. I look forward to making music with you!
