Music Reading & Theory

Reading music notation fluently is a core focus. Your child will gradually master sight-reading and understanding musical theory concepts appropriate to their RCM level.

Structured Progress

The program follows the Royal Conservatory’s leveled curriculum, so your child always has clear goals to work toward. They have the option (when ready) to prepare for formal RCM exams at their own pace.

Because lessons are one-on-one, I tailor each lesson to your child’s needs and learning style. We can spend extra time on tricky concepts or accelerate when they’re excelling, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.

Positive, Encouraging Environment

While this program is rigorous, it’s never high-pressure. I celebrate each student’s improvements (big or small) to keep them confident and motivated, so they feel proud of their progress.

Lesson Format

Weekly individual lessons, typically 30 minutes for beginners. (As students advance into higher levels, 45-minute or 60-minute lessons can be arranged to suit their growing skills.)

Term Schedule

Lessons run in 18-week terms during the Fall and Spring. We also offer an optional shorter Summer term (8 weeks) for families who want to continue learning year-round.

Practice Expectations

Students in the RCM Program should be prepared to practice regularly at home. I provide clear practice assignments and tips, and I’ll guide you (the parent) on how to support practice in a stress-free way.

Musical Achievement

Your child will progress through RCM grade levels, mastering increasingly challenging pieces and techniques. Many students in this program choose to take RCM exams and earn official certificates for each level they complete, which is concrete evidence of their achievement.

Confidence & Discipline

By working through a structured program, students develop self-discipline and a great work ethic. They learn that with steady effort, they can conquer difficult tasks. Standing up to perform a polished piece or receiving a certificate at an exam can hugely boost their confidence.

Strong Foundation for Future Music Study

After spending time in the RCM Program, students have a thorough grounding in classical piano. This foundation can prepare them for anything they decide to do next, whether it’s advancing to higher RCM levels, playing in school performances, or even exploring other styles later. They’ll have the technique and reading skills to tackle new musical challenges with ease.

Cost

$35 per lesson, calculated as $630 per 18-week term for weekly 30-minute private lessons.

Longer Lessons

For intermediate or advanced students who move up to 45-minute or hour-long lessons, the per-term fee is adjusted accordingly (for example, a 45-minute lesson would be prorated from the base rate).

What’s Included

The term fee covers the weekly lessons and my preparation of individualized curriculum and materials for your child. (RCM books or exam fees, if applicable, are typically purchased separately.)

Flexible Summer

The optional Summer term (8 weeks) is offered at a prorated tuition (e.g., 8× the weekly rate) for those who wish to continue between school years.
